As the sole programmer on the project, I handled the entire technical implementation of Calm Cove, including the game loop, mechanics, UI, and graphics.
Some notable features of Calm Cove:
Data-based building system - I developed a system that uses a CSV file to create ScriptableObjects for placeable objects, handling various properties like strings, booleans, localization entries, and Prefab references. This allowed our team to manage new objects in a centralized file without modifying Unity directly. With one click in Unity, everything can automatically be prepared, enabling rapid content addition and testing.
Adaptive sound system - In collaboration with Sound Designer Felix Engelmann, I implemented a dynamic sound system that reacts to the player’s field of view.
This system, inspired by Anno 1800's sound implementation, identifies objects in the player’s viewport and sends percentage values to FMOD. For example, ocean and nature sounds dynamically fade in based on camera position and rotation, significantly enhancing immersion.
I also actively promoted and marketed the game by engaging with the indie developer community on YouTube and Steam. We participated in Steam events to boost visibility of our game, without the need of financial investments. Key events included “Games Baked in Germany 2024” and the “Wholesome Games Sale,” both of which significantly increased our demo players and wishlists.
